Key findings
1. The testing effect is one of the most robust findings in learning science
Roediger & Karpicke, 2006 showed repeated testing beat repeated rereading on a one-week delayed test — 61% vs. 40% recall — even though the rereaders had higher immediate recall (83% vs. 71%) and greater confidence. Two major meta-analyses confirm a medium-to-large benefit over restudying: Rowland, 2014 (g ≈ 0.50) and Adesope et al., 2017 (g ≈ 0.61, across 217 studies).
2. Feedback, retrieval success, and effort are the key moderators
The effect is larger with feedback (d ≈ 0.73 vs. 0.39 without, per Rowland), when initial retrieval succeeds (especially above ~75%), and when retrieval is effortful — recall or short-answer generally beats recognition.
3. Spacing is the second “high utility” technique
Cepeda et al., 2006, a meta-analysis of 839 comparisons across 317 experiments, found spacing reliably beats massing — and the optimal gap grows with the desired retention interval. A follow-up (Cepeda et al., 2008) found the ideal gap shrinks from ~20–40% of a 1-week test delay to ~5–10% of a 1-year delay.
4. Flashcards are effective vehicles for retrieval + spacing
Kornell, 2009 showed one large flashcard stack (more spacing) beats several small stacks. “Successive relearning” — retrieving to a mastery criterion across spaced sessions — produced a full letter-grade gain in an intro-psych course (Rawson, Dunlosky & Sciartelli, 2013), growing to ~40% higher on a delayed test a month later.
5. Study guides and summarization rank low
Dunlosky et al., 2013 rated summarization, highlighting, rereading, keyword mnemonics, and imagery as “low utility.” Karpicke & Blunt, 2011 found retrieval practice beat elaborative concept mapping by a large margin (0.67 vs. 0.45 recall, d = 1.50) — though 75% of students predicted concept mapping would be as good or better.
What this means for how you study
Make self-testing your primary method. Practice questions and free recall beat rereading. If you can’t recall it with the book closed, you don’t yet know it.
Always get feedback, and aim for successful retrieval. Check answers after each attempt — feedback roughly doubles the benefit.
Space your sessions instead of cramming. Keep one large deck rather than several small stacks; for material you need for months, use gaps of weeks.
Treat study guides as a retrieval prompt, not a rereading target. Cover the answers and recall from memory — that’s what converts a passive summary into active practice.
